Who We Are
Mission Statement
Independent Living Centre Kingston is a regional non-profit organization run by and for people with disabilities. We provide leadership, support and skills development for people with disabilities and our communities.
Vision Statement
Independent Living Centre Kingston believes in a society whereby people with all disabilities fully participate in every aspect of their communities by applying Independent Living principles. These principles empower individuals with disabilities to explore options, make decisions, take risks and take control of their own life.
What is Independent Living (IL)
Independent living is a vision, philosophy, and movement for people with disabilities. Independent living was founded on the rights of people with disabilities to live with dignity. The IL philosophy promotes and encourages self direction in consumers so they can access the services they require to participate as citizens in their community. The IL philosophy recognizes the rights of individuals with disabilities to take risks and make decisions.

Independent Living Centre’s 4 Guiding Principles
1. Be consumer-controlled:
More than half of the people directly involved in the organization’s management and decision-making are people with disabilities.
2. Serve cross-disability:
We offer programs and services to all people regardless of the number of their disabilities.
3. Be community-based and not-for-profit:
People with disabilities can identify issues in their own communities which affect their lives.
4. Promote full participation and integration:
Support people with disabilities and encourage individuals to participate in all aspects of the economic, cultural and social life in Canada.
